The variety is a historic French selection, formed in the 19th and the first half of the 20th century. The plant belongs to autumn varieties and is characterized by significant height, reaching an average of 111.2 cm. The variety is valued for its productivity and a high-quality long false stem.

Due to the fact that this is an heirloom variety, various lines or races may be hidden under the general name, such as "De Gennevilliers 2", "De Gennevilliers 3" and the historic race "G. Truffaut". Compared to winter leek varieties, it possesses lower frost resistance.
