The MD2 variety was developed in the 1980s to meet market demand for sweeter fruits with a high degree of uniformity. It has become the standard for global export due to the combination of flavor qualities and the ability of the fruits to retain their properties for a long time during transport.

Fruits of the variety are characterized by attractive golden flesh, uniform size, and regular shape. The composition of the fruits shows an increased vitamin C content compared to many traditional varieties.
