Violetto di Albenga is an ancient local variety (landrace) of purple asparagus, protected by the Slow Food movement. The plant possesses a genetic peculiarity in the form of tetraploidy, numbering 40 chromosomes.
The characteristics of this population are a sweet taste, low fibrousness and tender consistency. The name Albenga is often used as a geographical marker of origin or a product type, rather than an official commercial variety of a specific company.
