The variety is a traditional open-pollinated type that originated in France in the 18th–19th centuries. The plant reaches a height of 90–150 cm. The spears are distinguished by a tender texture and a nutty flavor; stems 15–20 cm in height with firm, unopened heads are considered optimal for harvest.
The variety has high frost resistance and tolerates temperatures down to -30°C. When cultivated, the first full harvest is usually obtained in the 2nd–3rd year after sowing. The name is often used to designate a classic variety type rather than a unique clone.
