The variety is classified as open-pollinated and is characterized by an upright habit. The spears have a nearly black-purple skin, due to a high anthocyanin content, while the inner part of the stem is colored green-white.

During heat treatment, the purple pigment breaks down, causing the spears to turn green. The variety is distinguished by an aromatic taste and is described in scientific literature as a tetraploid form of the species Asparagus officinalis.
