The name denotes a group of folk ecotypes formed as a result of selection in the Galicia region. The plants are dual-purpose: they are grown for root crops, as well as young leaves and floral shoots, which are harvested before the onset of flowering.

The root crops have a conical or thickened shape, often with a purple tint in the upper part. The skin and flesh are usually yellowish-white. The plants are adapted to humid climate conditions and possess frost resistance, with a development cycle that can vary from 40 to 100 days.
