The variety Licalla is widely known in the scientific community as a model for genetic mapping. It served as a basis for creating a genetic map of camelina when crossed with the variety Lindo, and it is also frequently used as a starting material or control sample in genetic engineering experiments, including the modification of oil fatty acid composition.

In agronomic publications, the variety is considered an object of genetic analysis rather than a commercial product. Research involving this genotype is aimed at studying mechanisms of photoperiodic reaction, as well as the localization of loci responsible for plant height, seed productivity, and oil content.
