Roggianese is a local landrace that has been grown in the valleys of the Esaro and Fullone rivers in Italy since the beginning of the 19th century. The variety is represented by sweet and slightly pungent forms, and the designation "Roggianese Corto" is applied to plants with shortened fruits.
The "bull horn" type fruits have an average length of about 15 cm, while the "Corto" form is characterized by measurements of 4–7 cm. The plants have thin flesh with low moisture content, making the fruits optimal for drying on strings or racks.
Harvest maturation begins in June–July. The fruits turn red upon full ripeness but can also be harvested at the stage of technical maturity. The variety is used fresh in traditional dishes and processed in dried form for long-term storage.
