Roggianese does not represent a single specific breeding variety, but a collection of landraces cultivated in Calabria since the 19th century. Within this group, two main ecotypes are distinguished by fruit shape: long and round, among which both sweet and slightly pungent varieties are found.
Fruits of the long ecotype have a semi-horn shape with an average length of about 15 cm. They are characterized by the formation of the main part of the yield on the lower tiers of the plant. Due to physiological characteristics of the fruits, such as thin walls and reduced moisture content, the variety is ideal for natural drying.
When cultivating the long type, it is recommended to use staking and fruit thinning to maintain crop quality, as overloading the lower tiers can negatively affect the development of the upper ones. In addition to drying in braids, the fruits are consumed fresh or used for making sauces and preserves.
