ColUTAD is an interspecific hybrid of Castanea sativa and Castanea crenata. The primary purpose of the clone is its use as a resistant rootstock for commercial Castanea sativa varieties to prevent infection by the pathogen Phytophthora cinnamomi.
The clone possesses marked resistance to ink disease. Under moisture deficit conditions, the plant shows sensitivity to drought and demonstrates weaker defense mechanisms compared to some traditional varieties.
