The Côta variety is a landrace rather than a breeding hybrid, widely distributed in the Trás-os-Montes region. Scientific studies are conducting morphological, biochemical, and genetic characterization of this genotype for the purpose of biodiversity conservation.

The fruits of this variety are characterized by their large size, reaching approximately 3.8 cm in length. The variety is included in the list permitted for use in products with protected designations of origin (PDO/DOP), such as Castanha da Padrela and Castanha da Terra Fria.

Specific data on the variety's resistance to pathogens is unavailable; to protect traditional plantings from infections such as ink disease, the use of specialized rootstocks is recommended.
