The Neirana variety, also known as Neirana di Villar Pellice, consists of long-lived trees historically grown in the valleys of the Western Alps in the Piedmont region. The variety is classified as a local genotype of Castanea sativa.
The plant possesses features of male inflorescence development and is characterized as astaminate. The fruits of the variety contain vitamin C, as well as specific aromatic compounds, in particular γ-terpinene. The chemical composition of the fruits is distinguished by a predominance of fructose over glucose.
