Variety description

10 August 2026

The name Riobamba is associated with the Chimborazo region in Ecuador, where this crop is traditional. The accession is not a standardized commercial variety, but rather a group of local samples used in international scientific projects.

The plant is characterized by strong anthocyanin coloration of the hypocotyl at early developmental stages. Under stress conditions, the accession demonstrates a growth strategy aimed at maintaining viability and adapting to adverse factors, including soil salinity.

Quinoa of this ecotype is used as a food crop and serves as an object of biochemical research as a source of plant protein and starch. In comparative trials, the accession shows stable yield and adaptability to various growing conditions.
