The Di Viadana variety belongs to the curly-leaved endive group (Cichorium endivia L. subsp. endivia). In official vegetable variety catalogs, this variety is often synonymized with the Fijne Krul Groen variety.

The variety is a product of folk breeding and originates from the Italian province of Mantua, specifically from the territories of the communes of Viadana, Sermide, and Magnacavallo. The propagation and conservation of this genetic resource were carried out by specialists from the CRA-ORL research unit.

Di Viadana is characterized as a leafy salad crop. Plants of this type are described as strong and vigorous, which has historically been associated with the climate and soil characteristics of the Po River valley.
