The variety belongs to the group of broad-leaved endives (escarole, Cichorium endivia var. latifolium) and often appears in catalogs under the general name Breedblad Volhart Winter. The plant forms long, fairly narrow leaves of dark green color with a firm texture.

The plant habit is characterized by an outward, spreading leaf position, which makes it look somewhat flat, and the heart remains empty for a long time. The variety is traditionally used for autumn cultivation in the open field due to its good resistance to adverse weather conditions of this period.

Given the texture characteristics and traditions of use in the Netherlands, this variety is considered the most suitable for culinary processing, in particular for boiling.
