Plants of this type are small trees or shrubs. The fruits are pear-shaped, turn bright yellow upon ripening, and their surface may be covered with down, which often falls off by the time of harvest.

The fruit flesh is aromatic with a high pectin content. Due to their firm texture and astringency, the fruits are practically not consumed fresh, but are valued in processing for making jellies, marmalades, compotes, and baked goods. Harvesting usually takes place in October–November.

The crop prefers sunny, wind-protected locations and well-drained soil. The plants have decorative value due to their beautiful flowering in spring, which is why they are used in home gardening and landscape design.
