S 1 is a clonal form of Cydonia oblonga, used in commercial horticulture as a dwarfing or semi-dwarfing rootstock for pear. The use of this rootstock allows for the formation of intensive orchards with high tree planting density.
Pear varieties grafted on S 1 enter the fruiting stage earlier. Due to the characteristics of the root system, the trees require the mandatory installation of trellises or other types of supports. In stool beds, this rootstock may be susceptible to bacterial diseases, and potential relative incompatibility with certain pear varieties is also noted.
