The plant has graceful stems 80–90 cm tall. The main decorative value is provided by the bright scarlet bracts, while the flowers themselves are small. Inflorescences are arranged along the stems in the form of drooping arched racemes 10 to 30 cm long.
This crop is a short-day plant. When cut, the stems exude a white milky sap that can cause skin irritation. Decorative life in a vase lasts on average about 7 days. The plant is sensitive to ethylene.
