The Lifago variety is a purposefully cultivated form of Tartary buckwheat used in European agricultural practice as a cover and catch crop. The plant is characterized by rapid early development, the formation of significant vegetative mass, and a dense, leafy canopy, which allows for effective weed suppression.

The plant possesses high cold tolerance, yet is sensitive to waterlogging and shading. It freezes off completely during the winter period, which simplifies subsequent soil tillage. Compared to common buckwheat, Lifago seeds are smaller, flowering occurs later, and the rutin content is significantly higher, which imparts a bitter taste to the plant.
