The Barcel variety was obtained as a result of selective breeding from old pasture lands in the Netherlands. A distinctive morphological feature of the plant is its thinner leaves in comparison to many other tall fescue varieties.

In agronomic practice and scientific research, Barcel has been used as a standard reference variety. In experiments, the variety proved to be a less aggressive competitor toward other grasses under conditions of elevated temperatures and carbon dioxide concentrations, and also served as a subject for studying livestock grazing preferences.
