The Franklin variety belongs to the subspecies of red fescue (Festuca rubra L.) and is characterized by strong creeping traits. This variety is intended for inclusion in grass mixtures used for the establishment of lawns.

In official descriptions, including documentation from the EU Community Plant Variety Office, the Franklin variety is used as a reference sample when conducting comparative trials of morphological characteristics, in particular when evaluating the length-to-width ratio of the flag leaf.
