The variety was bred as a result of individual selection from the Acala SJ-2 variety, which is a complex hybrid created in the San Joaquin Valley with the participation of the United States Department of Agriculture and the California Agricultural Experiment Station.
The variety is classified as late-maturing, sometimes as very late-maturing. During field trials, the plant showed marked sensitivity to moisture deficit during the crop formation and ripening periods, even under conditions of full irrigation.
