The variety is characterized by high-quality malt, in particular high hot water extract. It has been used repeatedly as a component in breeding programs, for example in the development of the French variety Tremois.

In phytopathological studies, the variety is known for its susceptibility to certain races of barley leaf rust. Its genetic material has been used in work to study and transfer rust resistance genes, including the Rph13 gene.
