The ABI Cardinal variety is a mid-season two-row spring malting barley. The plant is characterized by medium height, good yield, and resistance to leaf diseases. The grain is distinguished by good plumpness; however, the variety is sensitive to pre-harvest sprouting and has reduced deoxynivalenol accumulation.
The Cardinal FD variety is a winter six-row barley bred in Romania. The thousand kernel weight under irrigation reaches 46–50 g. The variety is distinguished by a shortened vegetation period and is susceptible to fungal infections such as Alternaria spp. and Drechslera spp., which cause embryo discoloration.
The variety is listed in the national registry — its seeds are authorized for sale in this country.
