The barley variety Irania belongs to historical varieties mentioned in agricultural research of the 1970s–1980s. This variety is not a malting type and was classified in publications of that period as unsuitable for use in the brewing industry.

In scientific literature, the variety is characterized by specific resistance mechanisms to loose smut. Its resistance is associated with the phenomenon of cleistogamy — closed flowering, which prevents the penetration of fungal spores.
