Lavrans is a six-row barley with hulled grain. The protein content in the produce is estimated as average; the variety has been used as a reference sample in studies of grain amino acid composition. The pedigree of the variety includes the parent lines Vera, Arve, Sold, and Alva.
The variety shows adaptability to harsh conditions, which allows it to be grown in regions with cold climates. In the scientific community, the variety is studied for its susceptibility to leaf spot caused by the fungus Ramularia collo-cygni, as well as to the net blotch pathogen Pyrenophora teres f. teres.
