The variety is genetic material obtained by crossing Solanum lycopersicum and Solanum habrochaites. The primary purpose of the hybrid is its use as rootstock when grafting cultivated tomato varieties to improve plant resistance to soil-borne biotic and abiotic stresses.

As a specialized rootstock, Ambiance is aimed at developing a vigorous root system. Traits characteristic of table varieties, such as maturity group or fruit marketability, are not determining factors for this hybrid.
