The variety was discovered in the wild in the state of North Carolina. Unlike common ornamental varieties with large sterile flowers, Wesser Falls is a lacecap form, the inflorescences of which consist mainly of fertile pink flowers.

The plant has relative resistance to diseases, including powdery mildew. The main significance of the variety lies in breeding work: it was used as a source of the pink color gene when creating modern series of pink-flowering Hydrangea arborescens.
