The term "Compacta" in horticultural literature is often used to denote various cultivars of Hydrangea macrophylla that differ from the species plants by their shorter height and denser foliage. There is a risk of confusion with Hydrangea paniculata, which may also have forms with a similar name.

Plants of this group reach a height of 0.7–1.2 meters and have a rounded, bushy habit with upright shoots. Inflorescences are globose, their color varies from pink to blue or purple depending on soil acidity. Flowering occurs on previous year's shoots.

Such forms are often used for container cultivation, border planting, and the foreground of mixed borders. In the context of breeder Brugger's work, the name may be erroneously applied to cultivars such as "Bodensee" or "Brugg".
