The variety is part of the Teller series, which is typical for its flat inflorescences. The name Magpie is the English equivalent of the German Elster; the variety is considered relatively compact compared to other members of its series.

The plant has sturdy stems, which allows it to be used in container cultivation. The variety is early-flowering, but has low frost resistance and requires covering during the cold period.
