Under the name Hydrangea serrata Mont Aso, a compact shrub about 1 meter tall is known, featuring flat corymbose inflorescences, the color of which changes from pink to blue depending on soil acidity. The plant blooms from June to September, and its foliage turns red or orange in the autumn.
In the Hydrangea paniculata group, the name Mont Aso is applied to various forms. There is a historical seedling used as rootstock, which is characterized by medium vigor, good branching, an open panicle shape, and very late flowering. In modern trade offerings, the panicle hydrangea with this name is described as a shrub with upright shoots ranging from 50 cm to 1.5 m in height, with flowers changing color from creamy white to pink.
