Variety description

Hydrangea involucrata var. tokarensis is a taxonomic variety of the Bracted Hydrangea. It is a rare, endangered plant found on several islands of the Tokara archipelago in Japan.

Morphologically, the variety differs from the species by having thicker leaves, the presence of 3 or 4 styles, and capsule fruits 4–5 mm in size. The chromosome number is 2n=30. The plant is not a breeding cultivar and is of interest for botany and the conservation of biodiversity.
