The variety was described by botanist Yasaka Hayashi. Molecular genetic studies sometimes call into question the validity of distinguishing this taxon as a separate unit due to blurred boundaries between populations of the species.
The variety differs from the typical form of the species by having larger, thicker, and densely pubescent leaves on both sides. Before opening, the inflorescences are protected by large bracts, and they contain both fertile and sterile flowers. Reproductive organs typically have 3 styles.
The plant is used as an ornamental; in garden cultivation, it may be encountered under the name Oshima. In natural conditions, it grows in Japan on the Izu Peninsula and the adjacent islands.

Green indicates countries where the variety is listed in the national catalogue and its seeds are authorized for sale. Expired registrations are marked separately: the variety was previously admitted, but sale is no longer permitted.
