The shrub is distinguished by a wide-spreading dense crown with stiff vertical shoots having a purple-violet hue. The evergreen elliptical leaves 3–5 cm long have a glossy surface, pronounced undulation of the margins, and 8–12 spiny teeth.
The plant is female and requires a male pollinator for fruiting. In May, it blooms with small white flowers, and in October, bright red spherical fruits form on the bush, persisting until March. The variety is slow-growing, adapted to the climate of USDA zone 5, and prefers moist fertile soils.
The plant possesses good wind resistance, however, it requires protection from cold winter winds. It is used in landscape design for creating hedges, topiary forms, planting in groups, or as a specimen plant.
