The plant is an evergreen shrub or small tree with a dense, distinctly pyramidal crown shape. The leaves are leathery, dark green, glossy, entire or with sparse spines that are less sharp than those of the species holly.
The variety grows vigorously, reaching up to 4 meters in height in 10 years and up to 5–6 meters at maturity. It blooms with small white flowers in late spring. It is a female variety; in the presence of a male pollinator plant, it produces bright red berries that persist on the branches during the winter period.
The plant possesses increased winter hardiness compared to a number of common varieties. It is used in ornamental gardening as a specimen plant, for creating hedges, and in topiary art.
