The Lipo variety is a tetraploid form of Italian ryegrass. In the period from 1972 to 1996, it was included in the list of varieties recommended for cultivation in Switzerland and represented the first Swiss tetraploid selection of this crop.

The plant demonstrated high dry matter yield rates, possessed good digestibility and nutritional value. Within breeding programs, the variety served as a benchmark for evaluating resistance to rust, although under certain conditions, particularly when affected by viruses, it showed sensitivity to thinning of the stand.

The variety was used for the establishment of sown meadows and pastures, often including it in the composition of grass mixtures. In modern agricultural practice, it has been largely replaced by newer breeding lines.
