The variety is diploid and possesses a semi-erect or erect growth habit. It is distinguished by rapid development and early maturity, providing a high dry matter yield at the first cut. The plant forms significant biomass at initial stages, which contributes to quick soil coverage and its protection against erosion.
The ryegrass is used as an intermediate crop, sown both in pure stands and in mixtures with clover. Besides the production of forage for livestock and use in biogas plants, the variety is applied for improving soil structure, accumulation of humus, and nitrogen retention.
In reference literature, the name Diplomat is also found for a turf variety of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) used in landscaping and on sports facilities.
