The variety is a hybrid containing approximately 75% genetic material of perennial ryegrass and 25% Italian ryegrass. It is characterized by late inflorescence heading, occurring approximately 7–8 days later than many other hybrids.
The plant exhibits active growth during winter and early spring periods, and also retains the ability to form leaf mass in the summer under irrigation conditions. The stand is distinguished by high palatability for livestock and high forage quality.
Ohau is intended for use in pasture-based livestock systems with an exploitation period of 2–4 years. The variety possesses high competitiveness within the stand and is often used as a standard in breeding comparisons with new hybrids.
