The variety was discovered in 1952 in New Zealand. The tree is medium or weak-growing depending on the rootstock used. The variety is partially self-fertile and requires pollinator varieties such as Gala, Fuji, or Golden Delicious for a stable yield.

Fruits are large or medium-sized, elongated-round, often ribbed, with a red or orange-red blush on a yellow-green background. The flesh is firm and juicy. Harvest maturity occurs in late September or October; fruits store until May. The variety is moderately resistant to scab and powdery mildew, and sensitive to fire blight.
