The trees are large and long-lived. The fruits ripen in the first half of October, with a width of about 58 mm and a height of 47–48 mm. The fruit surface is ribbed and covered with blackish-brown lenticels; the skin is oily to the touch.

The apple flesh is greenish and juicy, with a moderately sweet taste with a hint of acidity. The variety has traditionally been used in households for fresh consumption, culinary use, making mousses, drying, and cider production.

There is confirmed misidentification: specimens presented in some modern collections under this name are genetically different from the historical original and exhibit characteristics of the James Grieve variety.
