The Christapfel variety has been known since the 15th century as a chance seedling and is synonymous with the Roter Eiserapfel variety. The name can also serve as a collective term for various local varieties that ripen in winter and possess a decorative appearance.

The fruits are classified as late-winter, characterized by high keeping quality and bright red coloration. In pomological literature, the variety is traditionally described as a dessert fruit of secondary quality, whose main historical purpose was long-term storage and decorative use for winter holidays.
