The variety is considered a local Swedish variety, likely originating in the early 18th century in the province of Scania. Historically, Kaniker has often been identified with the Oranie variety; however, modern genetic studies indicate that, despite the possible presence of a common ancestor, these are distinct varieties.

The trees are characterized by vigorous growth, high hardiness to climatic conditions, and the ability to bear fruit early and abundantly. The fruits ripen in September and are valued for their taste qualities.
