The name «Kardinal» refers to several historical varieties. In literature, both the old German variety «Kardinal Kaiserapfel» and other varietal forms, for example, Geflammter Kardinal, are mentioned under this name. In some cases, the name is erroneously attributed to the Russian apple variety «Korobovka».

Fruits of the variety «Kardinal Kaiserapfel» vary from medium to large in size, have a spherical or truncate-conical shape, and are sometimes ribbed. They are characterized by sufficient weight and hold firmly to the tree. The variety is characterized as sufficiently resistant, although it may be affected by scab in unfavorable seasons.
