The variety is historical and does not result from targeted breeding work by specific institutes. The name "Königsapfel" has historically been applied to a number of different local apple forms in various regions of Europe, such as Mecklenburger Königsapfel or Königsapfel von Jersey.

Specialized studies characterize this variety as having moderate susceptibility to scab and powdery mildew. Pomological descriptions point to medium-sized fruits with smooth skin.
