The Lired variety is a summer sport of the Scottish apple variety James Grieve. The tree is moderately vigorous, reaching a height of 3–5 meters, and forms a moderately dense spherical crown. Fruiting begins medium-early; yields are abundant.

The fruits are medium-sized and globose-conical in shape. The skin is green-yellow with an intense red blush; the flesh is creamy, juicy, and has a sweet-and-sour taste. The variety possesses frost resistance down to -30°C and disease resistance. It is intended for fresh consumption and processing.
