The origin of the cultivar has not been precisely established; mentions in the USA date back to the early 19th century. The name reflects the main characteristic of the apples — their size. The fruits are round, often with uneven sides and pronounced ribbing, having greenish-yellow skin, sometimes with a light bronze or reddish blush.

The cultivar belongs to late-maturing varieties; the fruits can be stored until December. The flesh is yellowish-green, coarse, and moderately crisp. The fruits are rarely consumed fresh due to a specific acidic taste; however, during culinary processing in pies and sauces, the flesh becomes sweet and high-quality. The tree crops regularly.
