The Serbian columnar apple variety Smaragd was obtained by crossing the Granny Smith and McIntosh Wijcik varieties. The fruits are green in color, ripening in early October, approximately five days before the ripening of Granny Smith fruits.

The Italian variety Smeralda is a medium-sized tree with a compact crown. The fruits weigh 200–250 g (up to 270 g) and are light green in color, sometimes with a pink blush. The flesh is firm, juicy, and sweet-and-sour. The variety has immunity to scab and powdery mildew, as well as good winter hardiness.
