Aragon is a local ecotype that formed in Spain due to the favorable climatic and soil conditions of the Ebro River basin. For many centuries, it has been widely used in Spanish agriculture and has often served as the base for crops in this region.
In scientific research, the ecotype is used as a standard for comparing the productivity and morphological traits of other varieties. It is characterized by a high degree of variability, the ability for osmotic adaptation under drought conditions, and a high leaf-to-stem ratio.
In agronomic literature, Aragon is classified as traditional local material rather than a commercial variety with rigidly defined parameters of height, resistance to pathogens, or a fixed maturity group. The ecotype often serves as source material in breeding programs.
