Romagnola is classified as an Italian ecotype of Medicago sativa. It is adapted to growing conditions in Italy and allows for 2.5 to 4 cuts per season depending on agrotechnical conditions.
High trait variability is observed within the population. Research on this ecotype is most often focused on studying quality indicators, such as crude protein content, and assessing genetic diversity in the Mediterranean region.
