The variety was obtained as a result of breeding work in the Sheki-Zagatala economic region. The genetic material of the «Берлей 29» variety is also studied in specialized research centers, including the Hubei Academy of Tobacco Sciences, for identification and purity control purposes.

The variety belongs to the Burley-type tobacco group. Its main purpose is associated with technological processing, during which the tobacco leaf effectively absorbs sauces and flavorings, which is a characteristic property of this type of tobacco.
